Standing Strong: Tasmania’s Farmers Back Fracking Freeze

22 January 2025

Tasmania's peak body for farmers has expressed strong support for the moratorium on fracking, backing the decision to ban the controversial practice until 2030.

TasFarmers CEO Nathan Calman stated that farmers often bear the brunt of the negative impacts of fracking and welcomed the government's announcement to extend the ban.

Mr Calman said, "Farmers and land managers are the ones who carry the potential risks when it comes to fracking. Avoiding it until 2030 is a good decision that provides farmers with much-needed certainty.

"Landholders would never profit from fracking on their land, it is only miners or the government who would benefit. That’s why we are steadfastly opposed to fracking."

“We have observed the national experience with fracking closely and concluded that the risks and negative impacts on farmland, or even adjacent farmland, are too significant to ignore.

TasFarmers believes the government’s decision to extend the fracking ban moratorium until 2030 is the right one, as it will provide certainty and safeguard of Tasmania’s Farmland.
