Rural residents should be aware that there are some strict regulations regarding dog control and Legislation related to owning domestic animals.
A dog is considered “At Large” if it is in a public place and is not under the effective control of a person; or without the consent of the occupier, in or on a public place that is occupied or a private premises that are occupied.
It is important to note that any dog considered “At large” on land being used for livestock related activities can be destroyed by that land’s owner.
Farmers also have regulations in relation to the number of working dogs that can be kept on a farm.
Local councils animal control officers are responsible for dealing with dogs “at large”. Your council can also provide information about policies on registration and control of domestic dogs.
