TasFarmers Urges Councils to Halt Rate Rises Amid Farm Sector Strain

26 June 2025

TasFarmers has voiced strong concern over proposed council rate increases across Tasmania that exceed the Consumer Price Index (CPI), warning they could place unsustainable pressure on already stretched farming operations.

In an open letter to local councils, the state’s peak farming body outlined the compounding economic challenges facing producers, from global tariff instability and inflation to dry seasonal conditions and continued price pressures from major supermarkets.

TasFarmers is calling on local governments to prioritise efficiency and protect the backbone of their regional communities.
