Reflecting on a year at TasFarmers: A journey of advocacy and support

Looking back on the past year after such a pertinent day as National AgDay, it’s clear just how pivotal TasFarmers' work is for agriculture and rural communities across Tasmania.

From advocating for stronger biosecurity measures to building and connecting farmers to networks that support drought resilience, the organisation's efforts reach deep into the lives of Tasmanian farmers.

My journey with TasFarmers began with working as the Enhanced Biosecurity Project and Living Next Door to a Farmer Project Officer. Helping farmers protect agricultural lands from biosecurity risks and ensuring a safe environment for both farming communities and residents across Tasmania. The role has focused on the importance of understanding and cooperation within rural areas, where shared respect and communication are essential.

Advocacy is at the core of TasFarmers' mission, ensuring that the agricultural community's voice is not only heard but acted upon in policy discussions. Building these bridges with policymakers and industry leaders strengthens the foundation for long-term success and stability in Tasmanian agriculture.

As extended dry conditions have intensified, TasFarmers has also prioritised coordinating support for communities hit hardest, providing me an opportunity to transition to the role of External Engagement Officer and Drought Support Coordinator. Our efforts in drought support for mainland Tasmania, King and Flinders Islands provided connections to essential resources to farmers and their families, offering relief during tough seasons.

Beyond the economic impact, drought can significantly affect the mental health and well-being of those in agriculture, underscoring the need for accessible support networks. It’s inspiring to see TasFarmers champion this cause, recognising that resilience is just as much about community support as it is about economic recovery.

On this note I would like to express my gratitude to the team and everyone that I have worked with during my time with TasFarmers as I transition to a new role with Rural Alive and Well (RAW) in the north and northeast of Tasmania, extending the alignment of my work life with this mission of resilience and community support.

RAW’s work in mental health and well-being complements the efforts of TasFarmers, and it’s an honour to continue serving rural Tasmania in a new capacity. The shared mission of these organisations, strengthening rural communities, providing resources, and championing the agricultural sector, will continue to be pivotal in the face of ongoing challenges.

TasFarmers’ dedication to advocacy, support, and community connection has made a real difference in Tasmania’s agricultural landscape and the journey continues as they work to support the future of farming in Tasmania.

Of course, on National AgDay, I must finish with a heartfelt thank you to all our farmers for the dedication, resilience, and passion you put into growing our food and fibre. Your hard work sustains our communities, feeds our families, and is the real backbone of our economy. #AgDayAU #GrowYouGoodThing #ThankAFarmer
