King Island Telstra Mobile Network Upgrade

Project Summary and Status

A current Mobile network upgrade is underway on King Island. The project will improve Telstra mobile coverage, boost network capacity and data speeds, and strengthen communication reliability to the island.

It involves the construction of four new mobile sites and over 50kms of new optical fibre connecting Cape Wickham and Grassy Harbour to the existing fibre network.

The project is supported by a $9.8 million investment jointly co-funded by Telstra, King Island Council, the Tasmanian Government, and the Australian Government as part of the Regional Connectivity Program.

The project will deliver:

  • 2 new macro mobile sites at Yambacoona and Naracoopa
  • 2 new mobile small cells at Currie and Grassy
  • Mobiles Capacity Upgrade at Loorana
  • Gentle Annie and Cape Wickham - 4G Mobile Capacity Upgrade
  • Greater then 50kms of new fibre optic transmission cable installed
