Export market a focus for Tasmanian wool growers

21 February 2023

Wool sales in Melbourne wrapped up last week, with more the 2,500 bales of wool making their way across Bass Strait from over 50 Tasmanian and Flinders Island Farms.

This annual event provided an excellent opportunity for Tasmania growers to showcase their high-quality wool to the export market.

George Nichols from Nutrien said, “The M33 Tasmanian Feature wool sale in February is always an important date for Tasmanian wool growers, and it was great to see the Tasmanian clip represented by clients who made the trip from all over the state.

“Some growers could have been holding onto this wool since winter because they know the value of this sale. It is a brilliant opportunity for growers to follow this wool from shearing right through to the Melbourne sale floor and then watching it go at auction, there was a lot of excitement.

“Whilst the market indicators at the end of the day remained unchanged, the Tasmanian clip on offer sold to increased competition.

“The better stylish types of wool attracted spirited bidding competition from Italian exporters, leading to some impressive figures of $24 to $28/kg, with some top quality super fine fleece lines selling to $38/kg.”

The two-day event allowed growers to be exposed to the selling floor and create new networks with local buyers and international exporters.
