Nathan Calman, Chief Executive Officer of TasFarmers, said Senator Tyrrell had listened to the needs of farmers and that the decision to review the scheme comes at a critical time, as primary producers across the state are being heavily impacted by drought, rising freight costs, and inadequate mechanisms of support.
"There is an urgency to refresh the scheme to ensure it is fit for purpose and that it places Tasmanian farmers on the same level footing as mainland counterparts when it comes to the cost of freight," said Mr Calman.
"The industry has made it clear that the review must thoroughly examine the real costs of freight across Bass Strait, identifying the full financial burden on producers and exporters.
"Consideration should be given to mandating the indexation of financial support to cover all associated costs, including rehandling, container hire, port fees, and warehousing.
Mr Calman said, “The scope of the review should also include the provision of emergency mechanisms under Ministerial direction to address urgent freight needs, such as fodder transport following natural disasters or drought.
"The suitability of current and future freight services between Tasmania and the mainland needs to be assessed to ensure they meet the needs of the state’s producers..
"We look forward to working with the inquiry and stakeholders to ensure the scheme can made be fairer, faster and sustainable," said Mr Calman.
