TFGA secure agreement to support pea production

Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of contract negotiations for the 2023/24 pea season. This collaborative agreement with Simplot aims to ensure the profitability and sustainability of pea production, with the new pricing structure being carefully designed to support growers across all Tasmanian growing regions.

Chair of the TFGA Pea Grower committee, Will Green said, the committee was pleased with the outcome of the negotiations but said input costs remain an issue.

"While a few input costs have decreased, growers still face pressure from input costs, including rising interest rates, electricity prices, machinery and equipment costs, labour shortages, and disease pressures," he said.

Mr Green said the past growing season also presented significant challenges for growers with heavy rainfall during spring resulting in substantial crop losses.

Mr Green said, "The weather was a challenge last year, and actually being able to plant peas. We sowed in October and couldn't get onto the ground until December. So, there was a three to four-week window where we couldn't get anything out of the ground".

"This resulted in poor and lower yields for many growers, and it was tricker when it came time to harvest."

CEO for the Tasmanian Farmers Hugh Christie said, "On behalf of the TFGA board and myself, we offer our sincere gratitude to the Pea Grower Committee and all pea growers who provided invaluable support and feedback throughout the negotiation process.

"The voices and concerns of the farming community were heard and considered, ensuring that the agreement reflects the needs and interests of the growers," he said.
