Opportunity for future industry leaders

09 February 2017

The Tasmanian Farmers and Grazier’s Association (TFGA) has launched an exciting new program for Tasmania’s primary industries; Future Industry Leaders – growing people. This opportunity is a result of feedback obtained from industry through the Tasmanian Primary Industries Workforce Development Scan.

The Future Industry Leaders Program has been developed to build the people management and communication capability within Tasmania’s agricultural, forestry and seafood sectors. The Program will focus on personal development and working with people.

TFGA’s Agriskills Project Officer Sally Murfet said that the overall goal of the program was to increase the leadership capacity within primary industries personnel.

“Building capacity in this area will assist in the attraction (and retention) of skilled and motivated talent to our sector,” she said.

The Future Industry Leaders Program is funded through the State Government’s Cultivating Prosperity in Agriculture initiatives and coordinated by the TFGA, through the Agriskills Project. The leadership program will be delivered by Macquarie Franklin and Shaping Change.

The Future Industry Leaders Program Coordinator Leanne Sherriff said that participating in the Future Industry Leaders program would help aspiring leaders to develop the abilities they need to make a difference in their workplace, community and/or industry.

“The program is being tailored for the primary industries sector and will be relevant and useful,” she said

“Leadership is like other skills – you can improve your capability through training and practice.”

The Program will run between May and August 2017 and consists of seven days of training workshops. It will be centrally located in the Launceston region to enable participants from across Tasmania to be involved. The cost of the program is $400 (ex. gst) per person. This has been subsidised with support from the State Government through its Cultivating Prosperity in Agriculture initiatives.

The Program is open to people in agriculture, forestry or aquaculture in Tasmania who are, or aspire to be, in roles with influence, either in their own business or in the broader industry. This includes producers, processors and service providers.
Applications are now open for the inaugural Future Industry Leaders program. To be involved in the program, people need to complete an application form and submit it to the TFGA by Tuesday, 14 March, 2017.

A group of participants with a broad range of training, experience, abilities, genders, locations and industries will be selected.
