Tasmania’s peak farming organisation has welcomed the State Government’s response to the Legislative Council Inquiry into the management of wild fallow deer.
Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) CEO Peter Skillern applauded the pragmatic approach that the Minister and the Government have taken on a difficult and complex issue.
“The Minister’s response to the Inquiry shows common sense and an astute awareness of the complexity of the issue,’’’ Mr Skillern said.
“The TFGA is particularly pleased to see the establishment of five-year crop protection permits, additional support to the deer farming industry, and the establishment of a Tasmanian Game Council that will advise on hunting, game management, deer farming, and browsing animals including nuisance birds.
“The establishment of a new Games Services Tasmania within DPIPWE, with a focus on primary industry, was a shrewd and intelligent decision by the Minister and we look forward to working with this new section.
“This outcome shows what can be achieved with patience and broad consultation, and the Government is to be commended for taking this appropriate approach.”
