The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) is appalled at the distortion of the proposed minor changes to Firearm Regulations in Tasmania.
TFGA President Wayne Johnston said that the contention, by a number of organisations and individuals, that the changes were a watering down of national firearms laws was an exaggeration which was not supported by the facts.
“These proposals have been developed over a number of years, and the changes represent a recognition that firearms in the agricultural sector are tools of trade,’’ Mr Johnston said.
“Other suggestions that somehow these changes would diminish community safety show a clear lack of understanding of the proposals and the strident regulations that currently apply and would continue to apply.”
Mr Johnston also pointed out that the TFGA had also worked closely with the Government to implement the tighter storage regulations that were introduced in December 2017.
“The TFGA is calling for a calm and sensible discussion about what is, at the end of the day, a well thought out and reasonable proposal, elements of which bring us into line with other states.”
